Overview

Duration: 4 weeks

This is a one-month short story writing course that equips authors with advanced skills in short story writing ranging from the pre-writing stage through the actual writing stage to the aftermath stage of short story writing process. By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in writing an interesting award-winning short story.

Course Outline

Week 1: Monday – Friday (3 days a week)
Areas to be covered What a short story is and what it is not. Elements of a short story. Steps of writing a short story STEP 1: PRE-WRITING Brainstorming Mine your own anecdotes. Coming up with a strong short story idea. Focusing on emotions. Reading examples of short stories.
Week 2: Monday – Friday (3 days a week)
Areas to be covered STEP 2: THE ACTUAL WRITING STAGE Creating an outline. Giving your short story a title. Picking an interesting setting. Hook the readers with a strong beginning by: starting with an action, starting with an insight, starting with an image, and starting with an interesting character. Developing the first draft for your short story. Avoid editing as you write. Understand the structure and the goal of your story. Keep the number of characters small.
Week 3: Monday – Friday (3 days a week)
Areas to be covered Give the reader someone to root for. Focus on character development. Focus on a single message (theme) Stick to one point of view. Create a conflict and develop it. Backstory is rarely needed. Appeal to the five senses (show more than telling) Dialogue should bring your short story to life. Each scene should escalate the tension. Edit your work. Ending your short story.
Week 4: Monday – Friday (3 days a week)
Areas to be covered STEP 3: THE AFTERMATH OF WRITING Get a second opinion (feedback). Consider professional editing. Practise by writing short stories. Write one short story every day for 30 days. Where to distribute your sort story. Finding a writing community.

Certification
